This steel staircase Saudi Arabia project delivered a straight steel staircase with integrated railing for a commercial build on the Arabian Peninsula. The case study covers the extreme desert climate challenges — surface temperatures exceeding 80°C, thermal expansion-driven joint design, and Saudi Building Code (SBC) requirements — alongside the logistics of shipping and installing prefabricated steel stairs in the Kingdom’s commercial construction market.

The Challenge
Saudi Arabia’s desert climate creates engineering conditions that have no parallel in temperate markets. Ambient temperatures routinely reach 50°C in summer, with surface temperatures on dark-coated steel exceeding 80°C in direct sunlight. This extreme heat affects every aspect of staircase engineering: coating chemistry, structural joint design, glass gasket specification, and handrail touch temperature.
The thermal expansion of steel at these temperatures is significant and must be accommodated in the design. Carbon steel expands at approximately 12 × 10⁻⁶/°C. For a 3-meter stringer spanning from an air-conditioned interior (22°C) to an area exposed to afternoon sun (80°C surface temperature), the differential expansion is approximately 2 mm — enough to buckle a rigidly connected stringer or crack a glass panel held without gasket clearance. Every connection in the staircase must include tolerance for this thermal movement.
The Saudi Building Code (SBC) is based on the IBC framework but includes Kingdom-specific amendments. SBC 201 (Structural — Loads and Forces) and SBC 301 (Structural — Concrete) govern staircase structural requirements. For commercial stairs, the SBC follows IBC loading provisions: 100 psf (4.79 kN/m²) for areas of assembly, with guard height of 1,100 mm for commercial applications. The staircase design package must be reviewed by a Saudi Council of Engineers-registered engineer, and construction materials must comply with SASO (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization) requirements for imported products.
An additional challenge is sand and dust abrasion. Saudi Arabia’s frequent sandstorms (particularly in the central and eastern provinces) deposit fine abrasive particles on all exposed surfaces. Powder coat finishes in Saudi Arabia must resist not only UV and heat but also the mechanical abrasion of wind-driven sand particles — a failure mode that does not exist in temperate climates and requires harder, thicker coating formulations.
Project Gallery
The gallery shows the completed staircase in the Saudi commercial environment. The super-durable polyester finish maintains its appearance despite the extreme UV index (average 10+ for 8 months per year) that would cause standard coatings to chalk and fade within 2–3 years. Our straight staircase systems shipped to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets routinely specify the super-durable polyester formulation as the baseline — standard polyester is not offered for Saudi Arabia, UAE, or other Arabian Peninsula destinations due to the known performance limitations in this climate.
Our Solution
Thermal Expansion Engineering
The staircase uses a fixed connection at the upper landing and a slotted slip connection at the base plate — the same principle used in our Beverly Hills seismic design, but here the driver is thermal movement rather than earthquake drift. The base plate slots allow 5 mm of longitudinal movement (accommodating the calculated thermal expansion across the design temperature range) without inducing stress in the stringer or its connections.
- Glass panel gaskets: Specified in silicone rather than the EPDM used in temperate climates. Standard EPDM has a continuous service temperature limit of approximately 120°C, which provides adequate margin. However, silicone gaskets (service range –60°C to +230°C) were selected for their superior compression set resistance at sustained high temperatures — EPDM gaskets that remain compressed at 80°C for extended periods can lose their elastic recovery, eventually allowing glass panels to rattle.
- Bolt connections: All bolted joints use Belleville spring washers to maintain clamp force through thermal cycling. Standard flat washers can lose preload as the bolted joint expands and contracts — Belleville washers accommodate this movement while maintaining consistent bolt tension.
Super-Durable Powder Coat
The coating specification exceeds standard residential and commercial grades:
- Chemistry: Super-durable polyester (also called hyper-durable) — a modified polyester formulation with enhanced UV stabilizers that provides color and gloss retention exceeding AAMA 2604 requirements: less than 5 ΔE color change and less than 50% gloss loss after 10 years of Florida or equivalent UV exposure.
- DFT: 120 μm minimum (versus 80 μm standard) to provide additional abrasion resistance against wind-driven sand.
- Substrate preparation: SA 2.5 blast cleaning followed by iron phosphate conversion coating — the conversion coating provides an additional corrosion barrier beneath the powder and improves adhesion in the high-temperature environment.
Handrail Touch Temperature
Dark-coated steel handrails in direct Saudi sun can reach 70–80°C — hot enough to cause contact burns. The design addressed this through color selection (RAL 9005 matte absorbs less radiant heat than gloss finishes) and by specifying a handrail geometry with sufficient thermal mass (42.4 mm × 3 mm wall CHS) to slow the surface temperature rise. For exterior-exposed handrails in GCC markets, we typically recommend a lighter RAL colour or stainless steel to keep touch temperature below the 48°C threshold recommended by burn injury research.
Delivery & Installation
Saudi Arabia delivery involves sea freight to Jeddah Islamic Port (west coast) or Dammam King Abdulaziz Port (east coast), followed by domestic trucking. Total transit approximately 22 days to Jeddah or 18 days to Dammam. Key logistics considerations:
- SASO compliance: Imported construction materials require SASO conformity certification. The shipment documentation included material test certificates for the steel (mill certificates), glass (temper certification per EN 12150), and powder coat (formulation data sheet confirming heavy-metal compliance with SASO restrictions).
- Container temperature management: Steel containers in Saudi port yards can reach internal temperatures of 70°C+. Powder-coated components were wrapped in reflective thermal blankets to prevent coating softening during the container dwell period at port — a precaution specific to GCC-bound cargo that is unnecessary for temperate destinations.
- Installation scheduling: Outdoor installation work in Saudi Arabia is prohibited during peak summer heat (typically 12:00–15:00 in July–August) under Ministry of Human Resources regulations. The installation was scheduled for early morning shifts (5:00 AM – 11:00 AM) during the warm season.
For projects in GCC markets where thermal engineering, SASO documentation, and heat-restricted installation schedules are standard requirements, our stair and railing coordination reference includes GCC-specific specification templates and logistics planning guides.
The Result
The completed staircase performs in an environment that would destroy standard-specification products within 2–3 years. The super-durable polyester powder coat at 120 μm DFT provides the UV, heat, and abrasion resistance needed for the Saudi climate; the thermal expansion joints accommodate the extreme temperature cycling without inducing structural stress; and the silicone gaskets maintain glass panel retention through sustained high-temperature exposure.
The staircase complies with SBC requirements: 1,100 mm commercial guard height, IBC-aligned structural loading, and infill preventing passage of a 100 mm sphere. The SASO-compliant documentation package facilitated smooth customs clearance and building inspection — an increasingly important consideration as Saudi Arabia’s construction sector matures under Vision 2030 and enforcement of building code compliance becomes more rigorous.
